TRESSES ON THE FLOOR
By David Hauck

Saw you that magic midnight
'Cross a ballroom's crowded floor.
My passion was awakened--
Never wanted one thing more.

I wanted you forever,
I wanted you for life.
I wanted you to take my hand
And be my loving wife.

I saw your lovely visage
And the gown which you arrayed,
But what first caught my attention
Was that endless soft cascade.

It fell in raven ringlets
And it glistened in the light--
So lush & so inviting,
Like a garden of delights.

But now your mane's departed
Like the love that we once knew.
I feel so brokenhearted--
At a loss for what to do.

Guess that you'll go your way
And we'll settle all our scores.
Yes, your love, it has been severed
Like your tresses on the floor.

I courted you with vigour
As you flirted with such grace.
You welcomed my advances
And I loved your sunshine face.

You let me hold your raven locks
And kiss them tenderly.
You let me brush & braid them--
Could you not let them be?

Yes, soon there came our wedding night--
Felt your womanhood in bloom,
Enfolded by your tresses warm
Like a child within a womb.

But now all I feel is coldness--
You no longer me adore.
Yes, your love, it has been severed
Like your tresses on the floor.

I tried to feed your fancy,
Be the apple of your eye.
But more was what you wanted--
I knew not what or why.

We tried to make a fam'ly,
But the Lord, he took our son.
Then the Devil got within you
And soon your love was done.

I guess it's that I'm older
And you were much too young.
I guess that I'm old-fashioned
And you're the modern one.

You declared your independence
With shears from the commode drawer.
Yes, your love it has been severed
Like your tresses on the floor.

Hope your new man likes your look,
Your shingled-front back-bob.
Go down to the beauty shop--
They'll do a better job.
